Oils, Ashes, Gold Mica Dust, Canvas We all face discouragement in the waiting periods. It's like we're in chrysalis—the long, constricting transitional stage where the insides and structures of the caterpillar have to disintegrate before they can be remade. But that's the point of the breakdown: the remaking. If we're willing to endure the process, God will not merely restore us to how we were before, but transform us to a new state of being—where we can reach heights we never before dreamed.

48x36, Oil, Mica, Enamel and Ashes on canvas, Commissioned by All Souls Charlottesville For the season of Lent, each member of the All Souls community wrote down individual laments—broken and hopeless places in their lives in and our world. Prayers were lifted, and the papers were collected and burned. It was the literal "ashes of lament" that were then used to create this piece.
